Spine fracture does NOT always mean spine surgery. 🦴 Many stable spinal fractures can be treated without surgery when there is no significant spinal instability, progressive deformity or neurological deficit. Depending on the fracture pattern, conservative treatment may include pain management, a brace when clinically appropriate, activity modification, guided mobilisation, physiotherapy and regular follow-up. 🔴 Which spinal fractures may need surgery? Surgery is more likely to be considered when there is: • An unstable spinal fracture or fracture-dislocation • Weakness, numbness or difficulty walking • Significant spinal canal compromise with neurological involvement • Major vertebral collapse • Progressive kyphotic deformity • Posterior ligamentous complex injury causing instability • Failure of appropriate conservative treatment in selected cases Treatment decisions should not be based on an X-ray or MRI alone. CT or MRI findings, fracture stability, neurological examination, spinal alignment and the patient’s overall condition all help determine whether surgery is required. When surgery is necessary, treatment may include spinal decompression, pedicle screw fixation and stabilization, with minimally invasive fixation techniques possible in selected patients. ⚠️ After a fall or accident, new leg weakness, numbness, difficulty walking, or loss of bladder or bowel control requires urgent medical evaluation.
